May 31-June 9 | 2013 SUMMER DZOGCHEN RETREAT
2013 SUMMER DZOGCHEN RETREAT
Join The Venerable Younge Khachab Rinpoche and the YDL sangha in their
annual Dzogchen retreat. This year Rinpoche will be transmitting the
Dzogchen Longde ("Space Division") cycle of teachings, the second of the
three Dzogchen cycles. The Longde teachings emphasize emptiness, and in
particular, the view that primordial awareness as well as all the
phenomena that arise within that awareness are naturally free and pure.
This enables the practitioner to gain certainty in their true nature by
removing all doubts that this wisdom inherently exists. This is a rare
and unique opportunity as the majority of Dzogchen teachings currently
taught are on the first (Semde) and third (Menagde) cycles. Rinpoche, in
his inimitably skillful style, will be distilling the essence of the
Longde teachings in a direct and practical way throughout the retreat.
The retreat will be practice intensive, with meditation,
Dzogchen teachings and guided instruction sessions throughout each day.
Anyone is welcome to attend with a sincere interest in Buddhism and the
Dzoghen teachings. As there will be many hours of meditation practice
each day, prior experience with meditation and retreat is helpful, but
not required. As Rinpoche will will not be giving this transmission
again in the future, it is especially important for his long time
students to attend.
Date:
Friday, 31 May - Friday, 9 June
Registration begins 1pm on the 31th and program starts at 7pm; program
ends 1pm on the 9th.
Required Participation:
Rinpoche would like to add
depth to the Summer Retreat by having the participants live together and
interact together for the retreat, allowing Rinpoche to teach higher and
more in depth. Rinpoche has requested that the students attend the full
retreat. No one will be allowed to come and go for the retreat.
Location:
Providence Zen Center
99 Pound Road
Cumberland, RI 02864

Center staff. We will eat together as a group in the dining hall.

The Essence of Longchenpa's Seven Treasures Session 3of 3
The Essence of Longchenpa's Seven Treasures
Beginning in 2013, Rinpoche will be continuing his teachings on the Essence of the Path by focusing on Longchen Rabjam's Seven Treasures. Longchenpa is revered as one of the greatest masters in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He wrote many treatises on a wide variety of topics, but he is best known for his works on Dzogchen, the Great Perfection. He is especially revered for his extensive scholastic explanation known as the Seven Treasures.
Rinpoche has chosen to teach the Seven Treasures because it is very important to have correct understanding based on one's own experience and scripture. If we look to the great masters of the past like Vimalamitra and Shri Singha, we find that they devoted many years of their life to learning, studying and contemplating the teachings by relying on the very profound and unique Dzogchen logic of valid cognition. All of these great masters studied the Semde, Longde and Mengagde tantras, continuing to investigate and refine their experience. Longchenpa collected the essence of these teachings and indeed the entire collection of sutra, tantra and Dzogchen into the Seven Treasures.
Rinpoche will be teaching these Seven Treasures based on his own experience and understanding, as well as from the instruction that he has received from his own teachers. To receive these teachings in a concise and practical way is of immediate benefit to our own practice and establishes a firm foundation by which we can continue to study and contemplate the teachings of the Great Perfection just as the great masters of the past.

Requirements:
Since the goal is to present the entire Dzogchen teachings in their essential form, students must commit to taking the entire three weekend courses. This is important since most students don't have adequate grounding in the core theoretical and practical aspects of the essential teachings of Dzogchen. At the end of the course a list of books and authors related to the course will be given to those who want to engage in more in-depth study.
Testing:
Since this course is practice oriented, there will be no written test. However students are expected not only to understand but also put the teachings into practice. Rinpoche will be available for any questions or guidance.
Notes for Essence of Longchenpa's Seven Treasures Part 2 (2014):
In 2014 Rinpoche will continue with Part 2 of Longchenpa's Seven Treasures.
1. Choying Dzod - Treasury of the Basic Space of Phenomena
A presentation of trekchod and thogal- this root text along with its commentary is the most important of the Seven Treasures
2. Choying Dzod - Treasury of the Basic Space of Phenomena
3. Thegchod Dzod - Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle
A presentation of the Dzogchen method and the practical application of these teachings.
Rinpoche will not be covering the Drubta Dzod- The Treasury of Philosophical Tenets or the Mengag Dzod- The Treasury of Pith Instructions. The Drubta Dzod is a very vast and extensive presentation of all the philosophical tenets as well as their view, path and result. To study and contemplate these teachings is very valuable to one's understanding of the path but is not within the confines of this course. The Mengag Dzod is a collection of pith instructions that serve as an enhancement practice to one's own meditation and can be used as such without need for additional commentary.
