Kurukulle: Magnetizing Dakini Practice

Annual Dzogchen Retreat with Younge Khachab Rinpoche

This year’s annual Dzogchen retreat will open a door to the practice of Kurukulle, the magnetizing dakini. Younge Khachab Rinpoche will bestow the empowerment and instructions for Kurukulle,  the red Pema dakini whose activity bends circumstances, gathers conditions, and tames even the most difficult minds so that you can progress on the path to awakening.

The Four Levels of Magnetizing

Kurukulle’s practice operates on four interconnected levels:

Outer: Magnetizing beings with and without form and harmonizing the outer elements themselves.

Inner: Gathering and transforming the inner elements, the five aggregates, and the sense bases, turning the five poisons into the five wisdoms.

Secret: Mastering the winds, channels, and bindus so the wisdom of the three vajras naturally arises.

Innermost: Gaining mastery over mind itself. This is the real goal.

Stages of Accomplishment

Every deity practice in Vajrayana has a progression: Approach → Close Approach → Accomplishment → Great Accomplishment.

In Approach, you cultivate clarity and divine pride until the separation between you and the deity dissolves.

Accomplishment is the recognition that you and the deity are inseparable, what’s called “one taste.”

From there, the four activities—pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, subjugating—become natural expressions.

Kurukulle’s focus is magnetizing. This activity is unique to the highest tantras, and unlike the peaceful or increasing methods found in other vehicles, it has the sharp edge needed to tame beings and conditions that won’t yield to gentler means.

Kurukulle in the Nyingma Tradition

In the Nyingma lineage, two main Kurukulle transmissions remain alive:

Pema Khandro – Preserved in the Rinchen Terdzod, rediscovered by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. Rongzom Mahapandita, an emanation of Vairochana, gave this practice its precision and depth.

The Seven Profound Teachings on Kurukulle – Revealed by Chogyur Lingpa, carrying its own set of pith instructions and methods.

Rinpoche holds both of these transmissions in an unbroken lineage.

Why This Practice Matters Now

We live in a time where distraction has become a cultural norm, where faith is eroded, and where negative forces have the microphone. Kurukulle’s activity is direct medicine for this climate. She gathers the conditions for practice, draws the right people and teachings into your life, and subdues what obstructs the path, whether internally and externally.

Her blessings are swift, but not casual. Without empowerment, you can’t enjoy the fruit of this fertile ground.
